3rd Annual Django Festival
The Charm City Django Jazz Fest returns for another weekend of virtuosic musicianship, collaboration, and goose bump inducing surprises, all in the spirit of Django Reinhardt.
FRI FEB 23 | 8PM |
Guitarist Sara L’abriola opens the festival on Friday night in a duo with guitarist Thor Jensen. We guarantee a kickoff set that leaves you breathless. Friday will close out with beloved Festival favorite Ultrafaux who bring their rare mix of guitar artistry and compositional skill that has taken them all over the world performing. As usual, they will have a few surprises in store for the audience to create a truly unforgettable experience.
SAT FEB 24 | 8PM |
This year, we’re bringing Samson Schmiit(!!), the legendary Manouche Gypsy guitarist from the Strasbourg region of France, to Baltimore to headline on Saturday night. Schmitt is the keeper of a deep family musical legacy and is a monster of a guitarist. Samson will be joined by Mario Forte on violin, Eduardo Belo on bass, and Josh Kaye on rhythm guitar. Hold onto your seats because this quartet will be pure fire. Saturday night opens with The Django Legacy Band, the next generation of Gypsy-style players from the US, with Saga Award winner Henry Acker, Chris Jenkins, Grant Flick, and Maryland’s own Samuel Farthing, who will display how deeply this traditional has taken hold here in the U.S. While they are still teenagers, these kids are all powerful musicians.
SUN FEB 25 | 7PM |
‘Nuff Said, a righteous group helmed by Tom Mitchel along with John Previti, Danny Knicely and Aimee Curl, opens Sunday. With this quartet, expect a little oldtime mountain sound to kick up the jazz. The festival wraps up with Charm City Django Jazz favorites, Rhythm Future Quartet, one of the most fun and adventurous quartets in the form. Led by violinist Jason Anick, and the "the Finnish wonder boy", guitarist Olli Soikkeli, Rhythm Future Quartet expand the boundries of Gyspy jazz in surprising and refreshing ways.
